A good method when hunting a deer is by aiming one from a tree stand. Tree stand hunting has provided hunters a great advantage as they are given the opportunity to shoot deer from a safe, elevated distance, and as well find more bucks running across the woods.

However, just like the other methods of hunting, tree stand hunting should be learned properly and effectively. By knowing the right way of hunting on a tree stand, you can not only shoot prize bucks, but improve your shooting skills as well.

Here are some of the tips when hunting from a tree stand:

1. Find a good stand location. When looking for a place to set up your tree stand, it is recommended that you find an area filled with food sources, such as nuts, acorns, corn fields and apple trees, as these are the places deer go to for food. You can also set up tree stands on bedding areas so you know where your targets sleep and rest after a long day in the woods.

2. Check the wind. The wind plays a big role in tree stand hunting, as the wind direction can affect your shooting capacities. Deer also smell foreign scents brought about by the wind, so better learn the wind directions that can cross your chosen area before you out up your stand.

3. Cover the stand. Deer do look up, and when they do, you might just get caught. As much as possible cover your stand with branches or at least set it up in a way your hands and feet will not be seen by your target.

4. Aim still. Just like other hunting methods, you must learn how to aim still even while at tree stand. Getting too fidgety can cause your stand to tremble, which can easily be sensed by your target and make it run away. Control your movements when shooting, so they won’t see you.

5. Consider the stand height. The height of your stand also helps a lot to cover you from your target. If you are to set up the stand in a flat open field, you can allow up to 12 feet of elevation. Meanwhile, if you are going to set up your stand in a forest, consider around 20 to 25 feet above the ground, so you can be well covered both in terms of sight and scent; while at the same time retain good visibility of your target.

6. Keep silent. Most of all, be quiet when hunting, even when you’re up on the tree stand. Be sure to climb the stand quietly to prevent unnatural noises to be heard by the deer. You need not rush your climb; just keep it smooth and quiet. That way you can increase your chances of catching your target.
